Carolinas AGC: Running & Gunning

Dave Simpson

Spring’s sprung and we’re on the run:

  • With a record opening day with registrations, look for 900 attendees at our upcoming 2026 Summer Summit & Expo, commercial construction’s biggest annual event in the Carolinas. Details here.
  • Plus, we’ll feature 6 receptions and 6 prestigious awards ceremonies with scholarships, Hall of Fame/Young Leader/Small Business recognition as well as golf.
  • We’re mighty proud after CAGC just placed 1st nationally for our large chapter Education & Training efforts and a number of our members received Safety and Building/Leadership recognition at AGC of America’s Annual Convention.
  • CAGC recently hosted 3 Contractor Showcases throughout the Carolinas, attracting 550 attendees, as we now gear up to host 3 more in the Fall.
  • Our 2026 Winter Convention drew 500 people in beautiful Aruba and we’re already planning for next year’s CAGC event at The Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas.
  • We’re closing in on almost 350 Young Leader members. Please help us hit our 500-member goal this year for our Young Leader Program.

Education and Training

  • We recently conducted CAGC training workshops along with NCDOT in Raleigh and Asheville that drew over 800 attendees.
  • We just served 200 attendees at our annual HR/Safety Conference in Myrtle Beach, including presenting our new CAGC Excellence in HR Leadership Awards.
  • In Asheville, we held our final Construction Business Academy class with 16 businesses graduating students on March 31st. To date, 152 companies have graduated students from the CBA across NC at a time when 473 individuals have completed our CAGC Construction Bootcamps.
  • In addition to our SCDOT Advanced Traffic Control Supervisor Training, we are now offering the NCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Installer Certification; our on-demand classes now include Lean Six Sigma Certification & OSHA 10.
  • CAGC teams up with Goldman Sachs for 10,000 Small Businesses education program in SC.

Government Relations Action

North Carolina:
  • We’re working with the legislature on work zone safety, focusing on the use of speed cameras to enforce speed limits in work zones.
  • Efforts continue with NCDOT about our concerns with on-the-job training requirements for their projects involving the number of trainees required and how that number is determined.
  • Without the passage of a budget by the NC General Assembly, we continue to monitor any progress and push for additional funding for Helene repairs for NCDOT projects as well as other infrastructure funding.
South Carolina:
  • Tort Reform work continues here as the House is working in piecemeal fashion to address issues like medical malpractice and time-limited demands.
  • The House-approved budget bill, now before the Senate, includes $249 million for bridges, $125 million for interstate acceleration, $25 million for a Road Buyback Program (associated with the modernization bills), $100 million for County Transportation Committees, and $750,000 for encroachment permit engineers.
  • Both the SC House and Senate are working on bills to modernize SCDOT.

Added CAGC Member Value

  • CAGC brought AGCA Chief Economist Ken Simonson to Raleigh to give a construction upstate to over 1,000 attendees at the Annual State Construction Conference in March.
  • CAGC currently has over 25 member companies and 450+ employees enrolled in our Association Health Plan with a goal of over 800 employees by 1/1/2027. Click here for more information on affordable Health, Dental & Vision Coverage offered in both states.
  • CAGC published the 2026 Spring Edition hardcopy magazine, featuring the Pinnacle Awards, Convention photos, Government Relations Impact, Work Zone Safety and much more. All member firms receive a copy of this magazine; additional copies may be acquired by contacting the CAGC office.
  • CAGC presented the 2025 Pinnacle Awards and Construction Excellence Awards in January at the 2026 CAGC Annual Convention. Five construction projects and one individual won Pinnacle Awards, and 5 projects won Construction Excellence awards. For a list of winners, click here.
  • In 2026, the Construction Technology Forum will dedicate multiple quarterly meetings to cybersecurity, featuring expert-led briefings and peer discussion to help our industry stay ahead of emerging threats.
  • Work continues in going “live” in early 2027 on our new CAGC Association Management System (AMS), delivering a modernized platform that will improve internal operations, and enhance the member website experience and engagement.
  • We published the Utility Division Quarterly Newsletter (Utility Insights) with features on new Division Leadership, Division Goals for 2026 and Joint Committee Update.
  • CAGC scheduled on April 29th an online Digging Deeper Utility Division Update meeting where BRS, Inc., will share best practices on documents, utility damages, filing DIRT Reports, dealing with false claims and complying with new 811 laws.
  • We continue fine turning our excellent new CAGC website.

CAGC Membership

  • Q1 marked another outstanding quarter as CAGC welcomed nearly 40 new member companies and hosted committee meetings as well as a successful New Member Orientation.
  • Don’t forget, as CAGC members, to take advantage of all that is offered on Capitol Hill representation and the other many benefits available through our excellent partnerships with AGC of America and ARTBA.

Finally, thank you so much for your continued support and leadership as we are honored to keep the drive alive like never before for our CAGC members.

Best,

Dave Simpson, CAE, CAGC President & CEO, who has been with the association since 1989, can be reached at dsimpson@carolinasagc.org.
